SC Freiburg have officially announced an early contract extension for Berkay Yilmaz, who is set to return to the club after two loan seasons at 1. FC Nürnberg. The new deal extends beyond 2028, reportedly for three additional years, rewarding the defender’s impressive performances during his temporary stint.
The Turkish U21 international has proven his versatility on the left flank and can also operate in central midfield. In the current season, Yilmaz has contributed one goal and seven assists for Nürnberg under coach Miroslav Klose. Since August 2024, he has tallied nine goal involvements in 58 appearances for the second-division side, while his market value has skyrocketed tenfold to €5 million during his time in Bavaria.
Sporting director Klemens Hartenbach praised Yilmaz’s seamless transition to the 2. Bundesliga, highlighting his blend of offensive drive and defensive discipline. “Berkay has a big heart and total identification with the club—this is a strong foundation to refine details together. We also thank Nürnberg for their excellent cooperation on this loan,” Hartenbach said.
Yilmaz expressed his gratitude for his time in Nürnberg but reiterated his lifelong ambition to make it at Freiburg. “It was always my plan and wish to succeed at SC. Today is a huge day for me. I can’t wait to wear the SC jersey at Europa-Park-Stadion and celebrate successes together,” he added.
