Mexican authorities have decided to end the school year roughly six weeks ahead of schedule, citing the upcoming FIFA World Cup and an intense heatwave forecast for the region. The New York Times reports that the Ministry of Education has moved the start of summer vacation from July 15 to June 5, just six days before the first match of the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

Mexico is set to host 13 matches across Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey. “These changes are primarily due to the unusual heat we are experiencing, which is expected to persist through June and July, along with the hosting of the World Cup,” said Education Minister Mario Delgado.

According to the NYT, Hermosillo in northwestern Mexico recorded a record March temperature of 42 degrees Celsius. Further heatwaves are anticipated in June and July, with temperatures expected to exceed the typical range of 25–30 degrees Celsius.
